Why do so many African immigrants in Europe spend decades dreaming of returning to their homeland without ever making the move? This episode explores the emotional, economic and generational forces that can turn the promise of return into a lifelong aspiration.

For many African immigrants living in Europe, the idea of returning home remains a powerful emotional reference. It represents loyalty to their origins, attachment to family, cultural belonging and the hope of eventually reconnecting with the land they left behind.

Migration often begins as a temporary project. The original plan may be to work abroad, save money, support relatives, build a house and eventually return permanently.

But temporary migration can gradually become permanent settlement. Years turn into decades, professional careers develop, families grow and the host country becomes the centre of everyday life.

A profound paradox then emerges. Someone who continues to feel like a foreigner in Europe may discover that returning to their country of birth also involves unfamiliar social expectations, institutions and ways of life.

Children often make the decision even more complicated. Born or educated in Europe, they may have developed friendships, cultural identities and professional ambitions that are deeply connected to the country in which they grew up.

What parents experience as a long-awaited homecoming may therefore feel like an unwanted displacement to their children.

Economic obligations can also delay return. Remittances sent from Europe frequently support relatives in countries of origin, helping finance education, healthcare, housing and daily expenses.

For some families, these financial transfers become an important part of household survival. Returning permanently may therefore require difficult adjustments in family expectations and economic responsibilities.

The practical conditions of resettlement matter as well. Employment opportunities, access to housing, legal security, public services and social protection can all influence the feasibility of returning.

As immigrants grow older, healthcare becomes an increasingly important consideration. Familiarity with medical institutions, continuity of treatment and access to social protection may encourage individuals to remain in Europe despite their emotional attachment to their homeland.

Yet perhaps the deepest obstacle is psychological. The homeland preserved in memory is often the country that existed when the immigrant departed. Decades later, both the country and the individual have changed.

Returning home therefore means confronting the distance between memory and reality. The imagined homeland may no longer correspond to the social environment awaiting the returning migrant.

Some immigrants eventually resettle successfully. Others choose a life divided between two countries, while many continue to postpone a decision that becomes increasingly difficult with age.

This episode examines the myth of the endlessly postponed return and raises a fundamental question: where does home truly exist when the country of birth, the country of residence and the emotional geography of belonging no longer coincide?

Perhaps migration ultimately transforms the meaning of home itself. Belonging may no longer be defined exclusively by birthplace, nationality or ancestral memory, but also by the relationships, experiences and responsibilities accumulated throughout a lifetime.
