Donald Trump's second term at the White House upset the international order. His unpredictable discourses, his disregard for multilateralism and his complacency with extremes are a source of global concern. Behind the character, it is a lasting ideology – Trumpism – that threatens global stability.
A speech that struck the UN
In New York, in front of the UN General Assembly, Donald Trump once again shocked by his untimely and provocative statements. Far from the diplomatic language expected, he imposed a brutal tone, disconcerting heads of state and diplomats. But behind this staging lies a heavier reality: the already fragile international consensus is breaking out under its blows.
The end of a fragile balance
Since his return to power, Trump has acted as a destabilizing force. Chanceries no longer know how to approach: unpredictable, inconsistent, it overturns established rules. Even more serious, he openly liberated the audacity of extremes, giving unprecedented legitimacy to white supremacists and identity currents in both North America and Europe. Their target is clearly identified: immigrants and minorities.
Less war, more tension
The American President glorifies for having « war arrest ». But behind this flattering speech, the reality is disturbing: Trump's America claims the law of the strongest. International law, multilateral compromises and the search for consensus seem to be swept away in favour of assumed brutality. As a result, the world appears to be less stable, more through tensions that are ready to explode.
Revenge against Obama
Trump's ascension cannot be understood without a return to 2008. The election of Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States, was experienced by a part of white America as an affront. This identity injury has fed a desire for revenge. Trompism embodies this revenge. The Capitol assault in January 2021 showed how far these extremes are ready to go to maintain power.
A global political virus
What's happening in the United States rejalls everywhere. Trompism inspires and legitimizes other populisms: in Europe, Latin America, Africa. Even dictatorships take on this model as a surety to their authoritarian practices. Rejection of elites, manipulation of truths and identity obsession become a mode of governance.
Europe deprived of its dependence
The Trump Presidency acts as a brutal indicator of European fragility. Depending on American protection against the Russian threat, its technologies, its dollar and its weaponry, Europe discovers its vulnerability. Trump, through his contempt for alliances, forced the Old Continent to seek security and support, even as he proclaimed his strategic independence. This reality exposes the European Union's lack of political and military autonomy.
China: fragile but opportunistic
China pays a certain price because of its dependence on exports to the United States. But far from remaining a spectator, Beijing turns this constraint into an opportunity. It increases its influence in the global South, strengthens its soft power and asserts itself as an alternative to the Western model. Trumpism, by weakening the Washington-dominated international order, offers China an unexpected strategic space to expand its network of alliances and influence.
Russia as a malicious spectator
Moscow, entangled in its war against Ukraine, nevertheless observed the scene with malice. Seeing Europe crawling under Trump's feet to gain his allegiance can only reinforce the Russian conviction of a divided and weakened West. If Russia suffers from sanctions and isolation, it feeds on this disorder to legitimize its own geopolitical brutality.
Africa, invisible but coveted
In this global recomposition, Africa remains almost transparent to Trump. But this invisibility must not deceive: the continent, rich in strategic raw materials, will sooner or later create Trump's appetite. The day he decides to take his share in this huge cake, Africa could become a new field for a Trumpian deal.
The heirs already ambushed
Trump is not an isolated accident. His style has paved the way for a new generation of younger, more structured and more extremist leaders. Far from disappearing with him, Trumpism is likely to settle permanently in the American – and therefore global – political landscape.
Salvation in the hands of Americans
In the face of this danger, a truth is required: only American citizens can reverse this trend. By voting and in a democratic framework, they have the power to bring America back on the path of peace and cooperation. But beyond American borders, the rest of the world must remain vigilant: the choice of American voters concerns the future of the international order.
The world suspended at the choice of a people
History may remember that Trumpism was a warning to humanity. It is up to the American people to decide whether this warning will be heard, or whether the world will have to suffer the consequences of a shift to authoritarianism and the law of the strongest. The danger is real, the hour is serious, and the collective consciousness must awaken.
