As the war in Ukraine enters its third year, Europe discovers the extent of its strategic vulnerability. Depending on the US military umbrella, faced with an offensive and unpredictable Russia, and subject to increasing budgetary pressure, the European Union is caught up in a spiral of military, economic and political ramifications. Far from sovereign control of events, it advances on an unstable ridge line, where every false step could precipitate a major escalation.
The return of the tragic in European history
For several decades, Europe had been convinced that high-intensity wars belonged to the past, that economic progress, continental integration and globalized trade were a sufficient shield against the backlashes of history. However, Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 caused these certainties to break out. Even worse: beyond the initial shock wave, it is a series of European structural and strategic vulnerabilities who revealed themselves to the open, drawing a geopolitical trap of unprecedented gravity.
Facing a Russia offensive, nuclear and determined1 Ukraine exhausted but resilient1 Uncertain US support, and one Unarmed, dependent, financially weakened EuropeThe continent is in an increasingly untenable configuration. Military, diplomatic and economic pressure is growing on all sides. Europe slides slowly, but surely, towards a strategic point of no return, without total control of his destiny.
Strategic Europe revealed: military dependence exposed
The war in Ukraine operated as a a brutal indication of European strategic impotence. Behind the speeches of solidarity and the announcements of aid, the facts are stubborn: the defence of the continent relies heavily on the United States.
An illusion of autonomy never materialized
Since the end of the Second World War, European security has been built in the direction of NATO, dominated by Washington. Despite calls for « European strategic autonomy », despite the creation of the Common Security and Defence Policy and the European Battlegroups, the Union never been able to establish a credible independent forceneither in volume nor in doctrine.
The Ukrainian test: a logistical and capacitive impotence
The Russian-Ukrainian conflict highlighted the abyssal capacity deficiencies of most European armies:
- Inadequate stockpiles of ammunition,
- Park of obsolete armoured or air defence systems,
- Lack of electronic warfare, intelligence or heavy logistics capabilities.
In this configuration, American aid to Ukraine, in armaments, intelligence, satellites, proved decisive. Without it, Kiev's resistance would probably have faded in the first few months.
Structural dependence assumed by default
In fact, Europeans have accepted a posture of military dependence, masked under multilateral integration logics. The awakening is painful. Europe, facing a war at the gates of its borders, discovers that is not able to defend oneself alone, nor even organize the logistical support of a proxy conflict.
The American factor: strategic uncertainty and political brutality
European military dependence would be a less alarming factor if the guarantor of that security, the United States, remained a reliable and predictable ally. The arrival of Donald Trump at the White House has shaken transatlantic balances and threatens to dissolve them.
The gradual withdrawal of the US commitment
Even under Joe Biden, the United States' engagement in Ukraine has never been without limits. The supply of weapons, the authorizations to use certain systems, the financial conditions, all of this was calculated, measured, often delayed. American aid was fundamental, but never unconditional.
With Trump coming back, ambiguity becomes open hostility :
- He challenges the relevance of support to Ukraine,
- He condition this support with massive European contributions,
- He reactive its brutal transactional logic : « security against payment ».
Trump doctrine: disengagement and blackmail
Donald Trump demands that Europeans devote 5% of their defence GDP, while threatening to withdraw the United States from NATO in the event of non-compliance. It presents security guarantees as a paid serviceand not as an alliance based on mutual values or commitments.
This approach transforms the transatlantic relationship into forced commercial dependence relationship, where Europe must buy his securityoften by acquiring American military equipment, to the detriment of its own industry.
Budget test: rearming in a financial crisis
The massive rearmament that Trump demands, and which war seems to impose, comes in a particularly degraded budgetary context for European States.
Public finances weakened
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the finances of European states have been exsangue :
- Record public deficits,
- Debt exploded in many countries (France, Italy, Spain),
- Increasing social pressure on public expenditure (inflation, housing, pensions, education, etc.).
In this context, the required defence effort Representative several hundred billion euros. This will involve reorganizing not only budgets but also entire political priorities.
A competition between civilian needs and military requirements
Budget reallocation to armaments is made to the detriment of social and investment policies. This undermines the European social contract based on protection, solidarity and public service.
We get into a larval war economywhich diverts the resources of States towards military production, without a guarantee of peace in the medium term.
The logic of escalation: prolonging the war without a clear outcome
At the heart of the European trap lies the Ukrainian paradox. On the one hand, supporting Ukraine is a political and moral necessity. On the other hand, the continuation of the conflict, without a clear exit plan, increases the risks of uncontrollable escalation.
A war of wear and tear
After almost three years of conflict, the war has turned into conflict of position, where progress is rare, costly and bloody. Ukraine, supported by the West, holds good, but:
- The human losses are massive,
- The economy is devastated,
- Society is under constant pressure.
Russia, for its part, adapts, mobilizes its industrial resources, and remains militarily formidable Despite the sanctions.
Europe pushes to continue, without a definite course
In the face of this situation, European leaders maintain a unwavering support speech Ukraine. But this support seems increasingly decoupled from realistic strategic objective :
- Are we talking about total victory?
- Recapture of all territories?
- A simple status quo with better negotiating position?
The absence of shared vision contributes to prolonging the conflict without perspective, with Europe acting in the background but suffering the consequences in the front line.
The nuclear factor: the ultimate escalation underestimated
Any rational strategic calculation should include one key element: Russian possession of nuclear weaponsBoth tactical and strategic.
The taboo of Russian humiliation
In the current logic of some Western strategists, the aim would be to inflict a significant defeat on Russia to bring about political change in Moscow. But this approach ignores a raw reality factor Russia has a nuclear arsenal designed to ensure its survival in case of existential threat.
If she perceives military humiliation as existential, use ofUnconventional weapons becomes a not negligible.
Europe: first potential victim
In case of nuclear escalation (even limited), Europe would be the first strategic target :
- Geographical proximity,
- Presence of NATO military bases,
- Symbolic of Western power.
The risk of localized tactical nuclear conflict is now mentioned in several military circles; which would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
A geopolitical trap with multiple dimensions
Europe is thus locked in a multidimensional trap, which she helped build in part but whose levers she no longer controls.
- Strategic Dependence in the United States,
- Inability to produce concrete military autonomy,
- Conflicting economic pressures,
- Risk of military escalation,
- Political instability in allied countries,
- Polarisation of internal public opinion.
All these elements converge to place the European Union in a strategic position, both indirect actress conflict and Potential hostage of its evolution.
The tragic history of returning to Europe
Europe is at a turning point. The one where the war logics, rearmament, deterrence, cold calculations and systemic threats are returning. And this return is made without full readinessneither politically nor militarily nor psychologically.
She's moving on a dangerous ridge line, no margin of errorbetween solidarity with an assaulted country, managing a hostile superpower, dependence on another uncertain power, and protecting its own future.
The trap is there: helping to maintain a war without a solution while placing itself at the forefront of the risks of burning. History reminds us of a tragic constant: we know when a war begins, Never when she finishes.
