You are a traditional leader of a territory of three thousand souls in Guinea. The state, supported by an international consortium, wants to build a hydroelectric dam that will electrify four regions and supply two million people with drinking water.
But the project involves the submersion of four ancestral villages — of which yours — and the displacement of twelve thousand people. The promised compensation is derisory. Resettlement sites are arid, away from markets, away from rivers. And the burials of your ancestors will be under the waters.
The state is pressuring. International NGOs support the dam in the name of sustainable development. But the displaced families did not ask for anything, and progress here is called their erasure.
