[Analysis] Baobab of Choices #28 – School or Koran

Reading time: 1 minutes

The coexistence of traditional Koranic and secular public schools is one of the most important structural tensions in West Africa's education systems. It is not reducible to a conflict between tradition and modernity — It is a debate on the very definition of education, human formation, and the purposes of life.

Daara: between spiritual transmission and school exclusion

The traditional daara offers a training that the public school cannot give: the memorization of the Koran, the learning of classical Arabic, moral and spiritual formation, the anchoring of a solid religious identity. These contributions are real and profound. But in its most serious form, daara can also deprive the child of a school capital that does not easily catch up with adolescence.

Modern Koranic Schools: A Third Way

Today, especially in Senegal, there are Franco-Arab schools which integrate Koranic education and general education. Institutions such as medersas offer a bilingual, deep spiritual and academically rigorous training. Refusing traditional daara does not necessarily mean sacrificing religious formation.

Grandfather's authority: between respect and responsibility

In societies with strong gerontocracy, the patriarch's words have a normative value that younger generations increasingly challenge. This conflict is healthy: it means society thinks. But he must exercise himself with respect and with arguments, not with brutal ruptures. Intergenerational negotiation is always preferable to taxation.

Ibrahima is 12. He deserves that adults in his life find a compromise that honors both his faith and his future.
