Episode #48
Reminder of the dilemma
A — You accept transformation to conquer power and act.
B — You refuse and present yourself as you are, even if you lose everything.
If you chose A
Choosing A means believing that the system changes from the inside, even at the cost of intimate compromise. You bet the power you get will compensate for the identity injury. But by your own body, you are valid for the colorist hierarchy you wanted to fight.
If you have chosen B
Choosing B is making your face a political manifesto, an act of brutal resistance. You embody change before you even exercise power. But you might stay at the door, powerless spectator of a system that will continue without you.
Aminata's dilemma is that of an entire Africa caught in the line between access to power and self-reliance. Behind the seemingly insignificant suggestion of a « makeover », hides a system of aesthetic domination inherited from colonization — the same one that feeds the skin whitening market from Dakar to Lagos, the same one that in the West Indies has frozen hierarchies of colour for centuries. When a political apparatus demands that a woman lighten up to be « Presentable »He does not speak of beauty: he speaks of power, of norms, of who has the right to exist in public space.
If Aminata accepts, she enters the Machiavellian machine described by those who analyze African politics: a game where one sacrifices a part of his soul to hope to change the course of things. She said that power was a tool, which once elected, she could legislate against colorist discrimination, finance education, and revalue black beauties. But at what point does the tool devour the one who handles it? Each campaign poster showing its altered complexion will send a devastating message to the young girls of Abidjan: to succeed, erase.
If she refuses, she poses a founding act. His intact face becomes a political program. But African history is littered with integrity figures that remain in the shadow, when others, more flexible with their principles, held the reins. Moral purity never guaranteed political efficiency.
The truth is, no choice is innocent. One carries the risk of inner treason, the other the risk of virtuous impotence. Aminata is alone facing her mirror, and this mirror reflects three centuries of imposed norms.
Baobab never changed bark to please the wind. Rugged, dark, massive, it reigns over the savannah exactly as it is. And yet it is to him that the whole village turns when it needs shade, fruit or advice. Maybe the real power doesn't start when we get into parliament. — But when you refuse to uproot yourself to enter.
