You're the finance minister of a small Sahelian state. Your country is going through a food crisis. The European Union offers emergency aid of EUR 200 million — of foodstuffs imported from Europe. Enough to feed your population for six months. But the economists in your ministry warn: these massive imports will destroy the local grain market, ruin the farmers who have just stored their crops, and create a sustainable food dependency.
Accepting is feeding now but weakening for a long time. To refuse is to risk starvation in the short term but to preserve a national agricultural economy.
What do you decide?
- Accept Help : immediate humanitarian emergency, at the cost of economic dependence.
- Refuse or renegotiate protect the local economy, at the risk of food emergency.
