How can men inflict pain, humiliation or death, while maintaining an image of themselves compatible with dignity and virtue?
Throughout history, entire societies have organized horror with methods: slavery, colonial conquests, genocide, sexual violence, political crimes. Yet these systems have not only been based on the brutality of acts, but on a more subtle and disturbing mechanics: the progressive neutralization of consciousness.
Mass evil does not just produce executioners; He makes executioners who can sleep, pray, think morally. The monstrosity lies as much in the act as in the human ability to make this act bearable to its own consciousness, to anaesthetize empathy and to recompose an inner narrative justifying the unjustifiable.
This episode explores the psychological, social and symbolic mechanisms through which human consciousness is reconfigured at the heart of violence. He questions this dark area where crime becomes normal, where horror is adorned with virtues, and where morality ceases to be a brake on becoming an alibi.
