Alternative truths: the great interference of the real

Reading time: 12 minutes

It is expressions that mark their time by their evocative power. The « alternative truth » Certainly belongs to this category.

Appearing in contemporary political vocabulary with a clumsy justification given by a close advisor to Donald Trump in 2017, it is not only a language effect: it has become the symbol of a profound change in our societies.

The alternative truth is that interference of the realthis attempt to present as admissible what is not, to replace the objective fact narration manufactured and instrumentalized.

This is the illustration of a new era, that of post-truth, where emotion and belief prevail over reason, where adherence to a narrative is more important than confrontation with reality.

The factory of competing truth

Talk about « alternative truth »This is not to refer to another way of interpreting a fact. It's something else: it's build a discourse that denies, diverts or invents facts, to make them a credible version of reality.

Alternative truth is a rhetorical weapon. It makes it possible to justify the unjustifiable, to mask the obvious, to save time or to sit a power.

It is based on a simple principle: the more a statement is repeated, the more plausible it seems, especially if it relies on a shared emotion – fear, anger, nostalgia.

It's not a new invention. The totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century had already made State lies a central instrument of government. But what is changing today is the extent of dissemination and the assumed legitimization of this practice.

When Kellyanne Conway spoke of « Alternative facts » To defend the obvious inaccuracy of the White House spokesman, she committed not only a political lapsus: she opened a breach in which populists, extremists and ideologists from all sides were engulfed.

The actors and their objectives

Who are the masters of this factory of the false probable?

First the Governments, authoritarian or democratic, who find it a convenient way to legitimize their choices and neutralize their opponents. The US under Trump, Putin's Russia, Turkey under Erdogan, China under the Communist Party: all resorted to these competing truths to rewrite an episode, justify an intervention, erase a massacre.

Then come the populist parties and extreme straight. They found in this weapon a formidable lever. Their struggle feeds on an artificial cleavage between a pure people and corrupt elites.

To feed this story, We must constantly invent evidence, exaggerate threats, shake fears.

Alternative truths then become slogans, repeated on stage, amplified by partisan media and massively relayed by social networks.

The aligned media play their part.

In the United States, some chains have long served as a resonance box for these biased narratives.

In Russia, public bodies hammer the official version, stifling all counter-speech.

But the decisive factor is technological: social networks, with their algorithmic logics, propagate these simplistic and polarizing messages. Virality becomes the new standard of truth.

Clear and Rewrite History

The alternative truth not only concerns the immediate news. She is also a past management instrument. Nations have always tended to embellish their history, but today, erasure and rewriting are becoming systematic.

Clearing is denying or minimizing dark episodes.

In the United States, violence against indigenous peoples has long been erased from textbooks.

In Turkey, the Armenian genocide remains denied by the state.

In China, the repression of Tian

Rewrite is substitute a valuable narrative for disturbing reality.

Russia glorifies its role in World War II while minimizing Stalinist purges.

Japan softens the memory of its war crimes in Asia.

Former European colonial powers still speak of« civilizing work »concealing looting and massacres.

These manipulations of history have clear goals: to maintain national cohesion, to avoid demands for reparations, to protect the international image.

But they have a cost: They dig up memorial fractures, fuel identity tensions and weaken democracy.

The consequences of interference

What does this proliferation of competing truths produce?

First a loss of benchmarks.

Societies that manipulate their history or present deprive their citizens of a common basis of understanding. Collective memory becomes fragmented, opposing official narratives and militant counter-recitations.

Social cohesion suffers. Groups whose history is denied develop deep resentment. The communities are confronted not only with interests, but with the very legitimacy of their respective memories. Polarization is increasing. Trust in the institutions is being eroded.

Internationally, the denial sustains conflicts.

Turkey and Armenia cannot overcome their memorial dispute.

Japan and Korea remain divided on the issue of « comfort women ».

The United States is being crossed by constant debates about the place of slavery and systemic racism in its history.

Finally, democracy itself is threatened.

When the facts become relative, the public debate becomes narrative confrontation.

Politics becomes a triumphant spectacle the one who imposes the most attractive narrative, and not the one who presents Strongest facts. This is the advent ofa democracy of emotion, where truth no longer exists.

The attractiveness of extreme straights and populisms

Why is this concept so popular with right extremes and populist parties?

Because it fits perfectly with their logic. Their goal is not to explain the world as it is, but to present it. as their electorate wants to see it.

The alternative truth allows them to create an identity narrative where the people would be threatened by elite accomplices, where immigration would be an invasion, where the nation would be in danger of disappearing.

This weapon is all the more formidable than it is. plays on emotion.

Fear of losing one's identity, anger against elites, nostalgia for an idealised past : as many springs as populists can activate.

On social networks, these slogans find fertile ground: simple, striking, they spread in loops, reinforcing beliefs and making impervious to contrary facts.

The examples abound.

In the United States, the theory of mass electoral fraud in 2020, despite the lack of evidence, mobilized millions of people.

In Europe, the rhetoric of « Large replacement » feeds the speeches of the far right, despite its lack of scientific foundation.

In Hungary, Viktor Orbán built part of his legitimacy on biased narratives around the European Union and migrants.

Alternative Truths and White Supremacism in America

The case of white supremacists in America is emblematic.

For these groups, alternative truths are ideological weapon par excellence. They allow rewrite racial history by minimizing slavery, glorifying a homogeneous society, by inventing the threat of « replacement » population. They reverse the logic of the victims: whites present themselves as oppressed, threatened with extinction, justifying their radicalization.

The consequences are serious: these accounts produce a mental framework where political violence becomes not only legitimate, but necessary. The attacks on Christchurch, Buffalo, and El Paso were carried out by individuals fed to these narratives, who explicitly cited these theories in their manifestos.

The interaction is direct: the alternative truth is not just a discourse, it becomes an incitement to violent action, a call to defend an identity threatened by all means, including murder.

Assuming or denying the past: two opposite ways

Not all companies choose manipulation. Some face their past, and come out reinforced.

Post-Nazi Germany has recognized its crimes, multiplied memorials, integrated this memory into education.

South Africa has established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to document apartheid violence and attempt national reconciliation.

Others, on the contrary, persist in denial.

Turkey denies the Armenian genocide.

Russia rewrites the role of the USSR.

The United States remains divided on the memory of slavery.

The difference is striking: societies that assume a stronger democracy, while those that persist in manipulating have fractures that explode sooner or later.

A philosophical crisis

Beyond politics, the question is philosophical: What is the truth in our societies?

Since Plato, it is defined as The match between speech and reality.

But the alternative truth breaks this link. It establishes the idea that there may be several competing realities, that the facts are secondary to beliefs.

This is the triumph of relativism and cynicism. Everything is worth it, everything can be disputed, nothing is certain. A democracy without common truth dark in nihilism.

When the facts no longer exist, only the force of narratives remains, and with it the law of the strongest.

Refounding the Space of Truth

In the face of this danger, what can be done? Three leads are needed.

  • Critical education To teach citizens to distinguish facts, opinions and manipulations, to develop critical thinking from school.
  • Historical transparency : assume the dark pages, not to blame, but to free collective memory.
  • Democratic strengthening To guarantee impartial institutions, protect the independent press, restore confidence.

Alternative truth is not only a communication problem: it is an existential test for democracy.

Without shared truth, there is no society possible. The fight for truth is the fight for the very possibility of living together.

For an awakened youth facing the interference of the real

The young generation has a huge responsibility: that of not being misled in the maze of alternative truths.

History, with its shadows and clarity, is not a matter fixed in the textbooks; it is a living inheritance, a mirror reading the grandeur and abyss of humanity.

To not know her is to run the risk of repeating the tragedies she carries in her. Refusing to accept it means preparing the mistakes of tomorrow.

That's why it's essential to look the past face-to-face, without blush or transvestination. Dark pages — slavery, colonization, genocide, totalitarianism, discrimination — shall not be erased or enhanced.

They are the raw material from which the critical consciousness develops. They recall that civilization is never acquired, that barbarism is never permanently ruled out.

But knowing history is not enough.

We must also learn to exercise our free will, to put on the facts a lucid and independent look. In a world saturated with information, where each screen offers its tailor-made truth, the critical mind becomes the most precious weapon.

Check the sources, question the narratives, reject the abusive simplifications: these are the citizens' actions of tomorrow.

For truth is not a malleable object that one bends to his interests. It is this fragile but indispensable foundation upon which all common life rests. We can interpret it, we can debate it, but we cannot reinvent it according to his good will without plunge into chaos.

Alternative truths seduce by their apparent simplicity, but they destroy the very foundations of democracy.

To the youth, therefore, to assert loud and clear that the truth is not relative. That it is neither right nor left, nor western nor eastern: It is what resists manipulation.

That it cannot be instrumentalized without consequence. And that Only a people able to confront their past, examine their present and discern the true from the false can hope to build a dignified future.

Freedom is not only about voting or expressing: it is first of all about thinking for oneself, without yielding to the glamours of easy narratives.

It is in this sense that knowledge of history, the use of free will and the demand for truth are not intellectual luxuries, but the vital conditions of our common future.
