Submitted, docile and perfect: the feminization of artificial intelligences, mirror of an algorithmic patriarchate

Reading time: 6 minutes

Between advertising, robotics and modern solitude, the female figure continues to be instrumentalized to soften, seduce and serve. Behind the modernity of artificial intelligence is an archaic imagination: that of the programmable, docile and uncontradictory woman.

When technology revives the old myths of women

The digital age should be that of neutrality, rationality and overcoming stereotypes. Yet, the face of artificial intelligence is almost always... feminine.
Assistant voices like SiriAlexa or Cortana, humanoid avatars such as Tilly Norwood or Diella, Virtual Minister of Albania, the female figure imposes digital service standard.

Researchers see it as a paradox: while technology claims to free the human from its archaisms, it reproduces and amplifies gender hierarchies.
Artificial intelligence has become a patriarchate code entry, where the woman, even virtual, remains at the service of the other: attentive, docile, and without proper emotion.

From advertising stereotype to virtual assistant: symbolic continuity

The feminization of technology does not arise from anywhere. It is part of the continuity of an imaginary shaped for decades by the advertising, real laboratory of the female utility.

Since the 1950s, women have been at the centre of commercial production:

  • In appliances advertisements, the woman is associated with domesticity and softness.
  • In luxury advertising, she becomes seductive, but always offered to the male gaze.
  • In technological advertising, it is the guarantor of conviviality, service and benevolence.

Artificial intelligence is only Translating these archetypes into digital language. When an AI speaks, it is often with a woman's voice: reassuring, warm, consensual.
This is no coincidence: the feminine, in the logic of the market, applies to its ability to soften the coldness of the machineto make acceptable what might frighten.

Thus, the artificial woman becomes The emotional interface of a world without emotion.

Japan, laboratory of male loneliness

Thousands of miles away, in Japan, this trend takes on a fascinating anthropological dimension. In a society marked by loneliness, aging and the scarcity of human relations, female robotics has become artificial bond industry.

Humanoids like EricaHarmony, or emotional robots Lovat and Pepper are designed for keep company, listen, comfort, especially men who are lonely, disconnected from the real social and emotional sphere.

This phenomenon no longer belongs to the technological gadget: it translates a profound change in relation to otherness. Female is no longer a subject, but a service. A programmable presence that fills loneliness without demanding anything in return.

Japanese sociologists now speak of a "artificial intimacy", where the human relationship is replaced by a emotional simulation without conflict or complexity.
The man interacts with a virtual woman who never contradicts, never refuses, never suffers. The absolute patriarchal dream!

From advertising to artificial body: the same logic of control

Whether photographed, drawn or coded, the woman remains the support of a male normative look. In advertising, his body is framed, retouched, standardized.
In robotics, he is programmed, modulated, adjusted according to the designer's wishes.

As the sociologist points out Olivier Glasseycontrol of the female body remains deeply rooted in collective imaginations. IA does not escape this rule:

The female body, even artificial, becomes a field of experimentation where the creator expresses power over the creature.

This phenomenon prolongs the male promethean fantasy : create the perfect woman, both beautiful, obedient and eternally young. From Galatized to Ex Machina, the Western imagination has ceased to idealize the artificial woman, object of love and domination at once.

Merchandising the emotional bond

Behind the aesthetic, there is the market. Companies have understood that the feminization of interfaces promotes trust and attachment.
The user projects his emotions on a virtual entity that talks to him like a companion. The merchant relationship becomes affective relationship.

Japanese robot-partners, Western conversational avatars, or IA-generated influencers (such as Aitana Lopez in Spain) embody this sentiment economy : we no longer sell a product, we sell a personalized emotional presence.

The risk is immense: that of full commodification of the human link.

The feminine, reduced to a function of comfort and gratification, becomes The ultimate goods a capitalism that knows how to exploit the need for love as well as the need for consumption.

The dehumanization of women: an invisible symbolic violence

The danger of these representations is not only moral, but structural. They contribute to naturalize the idea that the woman (real or virtual), is made to serve, please and listen.

Author Laura Bates, in his essay The New Age of Sexism, speaks of "Digital intensification of sexism” :

"IIA is not content to reproduce the existing sexism: it amplifies, making it interactive, daily and technologically legitimate. "

This "perfect woman", docile and without contradiction, erases the real female voices: those who claim, protest, argue. It creates a cultural model where Obedience becomes the aesthetic norm and submission, the function of the female.

Violence is all the more perverse as it is invisible: it does not strike, it seduced.

A post-affective society: comfort against otherness

The rise of artificial companions, empathic AIs and feminized voices reveals a major anthropological shift: the refusal of relational friction.

In a world saturated immediately, otherness, this confrontation with the other in its difference, its freedom, its unpredictability, becomes unbearable. The contemporary man seeks relationships without asperity, without negotiation, without effort. And technology offers it this: a false link, perfectly fluid, perfectly controlled.

But it's at the price of a radical impoverishment of human relations. When the contradiction disappears, the dialogue goes away. When the relationship becomes simulation, love becomes consumption.

For an ethics of code and representation

The question is not to ban technological progress, but to re-inscribe it in an ethic of meaning. It is becoming urgent to:

  • degeneration of technology, by designing AIs with neutral voices and appearances,
  • Re-educating collective imaginations, by diversifying the representations of the female,
  • reintroducing the complexity of the human relationship in the design of interfaces.

It is less a question of silence the machine than of giving the word back to the real : to the woman, to the subject, to the otherness.

The feminine, mirror and victim of our modernity

What the feminization of AI reveals is not the triumph of progress, but the continuity of millennial domination under a technological varnish. The female body, formerly a tool for advertising and aesthetics, is now becoming a artificial intelligence and digital comfort vector.

The modern world, in its obsession with control and performance, doesn't want the real woman, but of its double : docile, artificial, perfect, faultless. A mirror that never returns contradiction.

But this perfection without humanity is a trap. For by making women who obey, We create men who no longer listen.
