When a nation is made against its origins: the whitening of Argentina and its blind spots
There are countries that build their identities on a pluralistic, sometimes conflicting, but assumed narrative. And there are others which, on the contrary, form themselves by subtraction: by swallowing up what disturbs, by minimizing what contradicts the national ideal, by relegating to the out-of-field the populations yet founders. Argentina largely belongs to this second category. She gladly presents herself as a « Transplanted Europe » in the New World, as if local history had begun the day when European ships landed. At the heart of this singularity, a guiding thread traverses the centuries: the will to whiten — biological, social, cultural and symbolic — an American space initially populated by diverse indigenous societies, and then marked by African contribution via slavery.
When a nation claims to be an exception
This will to laundering is not a rumor. It's a national construction matrixby institutions, public policies, schools, land ownership, censuses, and an implicit hierarchy of dignity.
Argentina presents itself as if the nation had been born from providential immigration rather than a long colonial friction, internal wars and demographic engineering. This story is not only false: it is structuring. It organizes what it shows, what it teaches, what it counts, what it celebrates.
Before the conquest: a territory far from empty
The first condition for making a country « white » often consists of spreading a pre-emptive myth: that of a space originally deserted, or underpopulated, or unable to produce a civilization worthy of that name. Before the arrival of the conquistadors, the lands of present-day Argentina had been occupied for millennia by a mosaic of peoples and social systems adapted to contrasting backgrounds.
The Andean North West, built around valleys, irrigated crops and redistribution networks, had complex forms of organization and, in part, integration into the Inca horizon. The North East Guarani combined agriculture, river networks and community dynamics. The Pampas and Patagonia were more extensive, pastoral or semi-nomadic, but low density gradient does not mean absence This is another territorial rationality, another relation to space and mobility.
This reminder is essential, because the money laundering project is not only sedative against people: it is sedative against evidence. It implies removing the previous presence to justify subsequent dispossession.
A population can be removed from records before it disappears in memory. Laundering becomes an administrative and symbolic as well as a biological operation.
The conquest: the microbial shock and dispossession as the first manufacturing of invisibility
As everywhere in America, the Spanish conquest was not only a military domination. It was a brutal demographic transformation, amplified by the microbial shock. Imported diseases — smallpox, measles, flu — spread faster than colonial institutions, disorganizing local societies, increasing famines, fragmenting alliances and accelerating dependency.
To this biological dynamic are added political mechanisms: forced labour, conversion, reorganization of spaces and the establishment of a colonial racial order where indigenous people are inferior by status and law. The essential here is not just the loss of population, but loss of sovereignty : the indigenous people become administered, displaced, requalified. It is already a form of whitening: not yet by the skin, but by assigning to a subordinate place and by the progressive erasure of the power to say « we ».
African slavery: a real presence, then a built disappearance
A misconception is often made by comparing Argentina with Brazil or the West Indies: because Argentina did not experience large-scale planting slavery, it is too quickly concluded that the African presence was negligible. But the presence was significant in the cities and in the colonial economic circuits. Buenos Aires was an important port of entry into the Spanish Atlantic system, and a part of the people enslaved in the area, participating in handicrafts, domestic service, militias, confraternity and cultural life.
This point is decisive in understanding the Argentine logic: the problem is not the original absence, but the « disappearance » later. Partly demographic disappearance: wars, epidemics, social conditions. But above all Statistical and narrative disappearance : no more counting, no more naming, no more teaching. A population can be removed from records before it disappears in memory. Whitening, here, becomes an administrative and symbolic operation: the categories tighten, the blending « Whitening » in censuses, and national history is rewritten as if Argentina had never been black.
The 19th Century: Modern State as Whitening Machine
The decisive phase comes with the consolidation of the state in the 19th century. The country must define itself, establish an elite, a right, a border, an economic model and a common narrative. In this founding moment, Argentina chooses a particular path: to become, in the imagination, a Southern Hemisphere European nation.
This project is not just a cultural preference. It is a doctrine of development. We explicitly associate modernity, capital, skills, « civilization » and Europe. And it combines, in mirror, indigenity, darkness, popular mixedness and « Barbarism ». The nation is therefore built by a hierarchy that is not only social: it is racial and cultural.
Migration policy then becomes an instrument for demographic transformation. Italian and Spanish flows, massive between the late 19th and 1930s, are not only welcomed; they are desired, valued, institutionally integrated. This is not just spontaneous immigration: it is the structure of a project.
Internal conquest: when territorial expansion becomes ethnic cleansing
Money laundering is not just a matter of ports and boats. It is also part of the earth, and therefore of violence. The 19th century military campaigns against indigenous peoples, particularly in the South, aim to secure space, make it suitable, open the way for capitalist agriculture and large-scale property. The objective is economic, but the method is political: conquer, deport, fragment, assimilate.
This makes it possible to understand a characteristic of Argentine racism: deep land. Indigenous peoples become tolerable as long as they do not impede ownership and exploitation. As soon as they claim territory, they become a « problem ». Racism is then revealed not as an opinion, but as a structure to protect heritage.
School, census, culture: laundering as normal
A country is not only laundered by weapons and laws. He's whitening himself by school. Argentina has long taught a history where European immigration is the heart of the national novel, where the native belongs to a distant past, and where black is absent or folklorized. Pedagogy becomes a policy: it makes evidence.
To this are added the statistical tools. When a State ceases to distinguish certain identities, it mechanically ceases to produce evidence of inequality. And when there is no evidence, there is no public problem. Racism then becomes a phenomenon without an official name, therefore without a correction policy, therefore without reparation. It is one of the most powerful mechanisms: turning domination into invisibility.
Contemporary Argentine racism: racism of denial, hierarchy and assignment
Racism in Argentina is often less dramatic than in explicitly segregated societies, but it is no less effective. He presents himself as a implicit hierarchy where laundering works as social capital It facilitates access to valued spaces, reduces suspicion and confers a presumption of legitimacy.
For indigenous peoples, discrimination is often twofold: racial and territorial. It takes the form of socio-economic marginalization, cultural stigma, land conflict, and sometimes criminalisation of mobilisations. The implicit message is: you may exist, but provided you do not disturb the order of ownership and the national narrative.
For Afro-descendants, the main mechanism remains denial. The country thinks « Black » ; Thus the black presence, whether it is a historical Afro-Argentine or a result of migration, is often perceived as alien to the national body. We don't just exclude: we outsource. The black becomes « Other » by definition, and Argentine identity is consolidated by contrast.
Regional opening: neighbouring countries as a mirror of possible trajectories
The point of opening up reflection to neighbouring countries is to show that Argentina was not forced by geography to become what it became. She made choices, where others took other ways:
The Guarani continuity remains structural, linguistic and identity-based. Metisage is not a shameful accident to be whitened: it becomes a national norm, and the Aboriginal language is instituted.
The Aboriginal majority remains visible, politically organized. The modern state eventually incorporated, albeit late and conflictual, a Plurinational logic. A society can produce a state without removing indigenous centrality.
Intermediate position: persistent indigenous presence, strong marginalization, intense land and political conflicts, but without the same level of narrative erasure. Indigenous peoples are visible as actors, so visible as a political subject.
Close to Argentina by its history of indigenous erasure, but on a smaller demographic scale. It shows that laundering can function as a national narrative in the Southern Cone, but that its power also depends on the state's ability to impose an official memory.
Thus, Argentina is not an absolute anomaly; she is the most accomplished or effective form of a model - that of the nation that wants to be European in America.
German-speaking and post-war populations: a revealing episode
The existence of an ancient Germanic immigration to Argentina is a classic phenomenon: agricultural settlements, educational networks, cultural presence and the circulation of skills. It does not in itself prove an ideological orientation. On the other hand, the post-1945 reception of Nazi criminals — numerically limited but symbolically massive — is indicative of a political culture where the state has at times been able to prefer power logics to the detriment of universal moral considerations.
In the course of our subject, this episode acts as a revealing: Argentina has long been more willing to think of itself as a European refuge and extension than to face its own internal erasures. The question is not « Is Argentina Nazi-friendly? » — simplistic and unfair formula. The question is: what hierarchy of values has guided certain State choices, and how do these choices relate to a more general matrix of Europeanisation?
The deep logic: whitening, not just changing a color, is changing the status of the real
Basically, bleaching is a multi-storey program. He can be biological, but he's more likely to be social. It consists of making bleaching desirable, cost-effective and normative; make indigenity and darkness invisible, costly or disqualifying; reduce certain presences to traces; to transform peoples into folklore; to transform injustices into « ancient history ».
In this sense, Argentine racism is not limited to insults or individual discrimination. It is one long-term arrangement, where the state, law, school, land, statistics and national imagination work together, sometimes consciously, sometimes by inertia, to make a story come true: that of a white, modern, European nation, almost detached from real America.
Argentina as a laboratory, South America as a possible spectrum
The Argentine case sheds light on a broader question: how can a society erase entire components of its formation while convincing itself of its neutrality? In Argentina, money laundering worked as a policy, then as a culture, then as an obvious one. Once it becomes obvious, it becomes difficult to dispute: the one who recalls black or indigenous history is often perceived as an importer of a foreign problem, while it only makes visible what was deliberately hidden.
The regional opening shows, however, that history was not written in advance. Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay, each in its own way, bear witness to other possible trajectories, other compromises between modernity and continuity, and other relations between nation and diversity. Argentina is not only a country that has received many Europeans. It is a country that has chosen to define itself by them, and sometimes against others.
And this is precisely where the contemporary question, the one that goes beyond history, stands: can a nation become adult without looking its erasures in front of it? Can it build a modernity that is not an imitation, but an integration? Can she recognize that real Argentina has always been wider than Argentina told?
Argentina lost in gran medida a esta segunda categoria.
El país debe definirse, dotarse of an elite, a derecho, fronteras, an económico modelo y a relato común. In ese momento fundador, Argentina elevates a camino singular: convert, in el imaginario, to Una nación europea del hemisferio on.
The política migratoria converses into an instrumento de transformación demográfica.
También enrolled in the trierra, y por lo tanto in the violencia.
In cuanto reivindicano territorio, reaparecen como «problema».
I don't know. The pedagogía is called política: fabrica la evidencia.
No is excluded solamente: externalizes.
Contramodelo revelador: the continuidad guaraní permanece structural, lingüística e identitaria.
The mayoría indígena permanence visible, políticamente organizada.
In el fondo, el blanqueamiento is a programa of level varios. Consisting in hacer of the blanquitud an ideal deseable profitable there; in volve the indigeneidad y la negritud invisibles o descalificadas; in transformation of pueblos into folklore and desigualdades into «historia pasada».
The regional comparison demuestra that historia no estaba escrita de antemano.
Can you recognise that Argentina real siempre fue más amplia as Argentina narrada?
