Proverbs of Africa: the memory of peoples, the power of speech

Africa is not only told through its territories, its peoples or its visible stories. It is also transmitted in a more discreet, denser, deeper language: that of the proverbs. At the crossroads of cultures, languages and traditions, these brief formulas constitute a real architecture of thought, where each image carries a lesson, each metaphor an experience, each word a memory.

From the Sahel to the equatorial forests, from the Atlantic shores to the eastern highlands, African diversity is expressed in a plurality of voices, rhythms and visions of the world. Yet, beyond this wealth of forms, the same thread links these expressions: a requirement of morality, a search for balance in human relations, wisdom forged by time, trial and community life.

In many African societies, speech is never neutral. She enlightens, warns, educates, referees. It is also inseparable from the respect due to the elderly, guardians of accumulated experience and custodians of a collective memory that no book fully replaces. The old man is not only an elder: he is often a living archive, a consciousness of time, a mediator between the past, the present and the future.
